Play Negra's number one claim to fame is
Surfing.
It is a very popular, beautiful
popular destination for tourists.
With some of
the most consistent waves and surf breaks in
the region, Playa Negra is a very popular
surfer beach featuring some of the most
consistent waves in the northwestern region
of
Guanacaste.
It is famous because the movie Endless
Summer II being filmed there.
The surf break at Playa Negra is a hollow
right break reef. If you manage to catch a
good swell, it is definitely worth it to
surf here.
here are a
number of
good hotels, resorts and accommodations
found at the beach, as well as a number of
budget lodgings especially for the surfer
crowd. Grab a quick bite at the renowned
Café Playa Negra, which serves up some
excellent local Tico delicacies. Directly in
front of Playa Negra’s surf break this is a
great place to chill and drink a couple of
Imperial beers. For those not interested in
surfing, head a bit further south of the
main beach for some peace and quiet.

Potrero Grande
A right point break, with very fast
and hollow waves. Located 270 kms
from San Jose with no road access.
You must go to playas del coco or
playa Ocotal and proceed from there
by rented boat. |

- Playa Naranjo (Witch's rock)
one of the best breaks in the
country, with very strong off-shore
winds from December to march. This
wilderness point is located in the
national park of Santa Rosa. You
must go totally prepared for camping
since there are no facilities. A
good 4wd is a must, and don½t forget
you mosquito net. |

Pequeño a rocky point in front of

½guanacasteco½ featuring very hollow
rights and lefts. Located 10 km

from San Jose. Playa Negra is one of

Avellanas. |

- Nosara Beach break, with lefts
and rights. About 350 kms from San
Jose. You go from San Jose to Nicoya
and from there to Nosara. It takes
approx. 5 hours to get there. |

Manzanillo, and Mal Pais Beach
breaks, with very consistent lefts
and rights and several points. A 4
wd vehicle is recommended. Now you
can find a lot of places to stay. |

Getting to Play Negra
Playa Negra is only 1.5 hours from Liberia
international Airport. From San Jose
international approximately 4 hours.
Tamarindo is 35 minutes by car where there
is a Municipal Airport with many scheduled
flights.
Other things besides Surfing
Playa Negra is a great family area. Kids
will love exploring the tidal pools,
climbing on the rocks, snorkeling, fishing,
shell collecting, swimming, playing pool at
the nearby hotel, discovering all kinds of
wildlife like monkeys, iguanas, crabs, and
much, much more.
Activities in Negra or nearby include yoga,
horseback riding, fishing, kayaking, world
class golf at nearby Hacienda Pinilla, and
more. |
