LOCATION: About Los Chiles

Los Chiles is in the province of Alajuela, on the San Carlos Plain (Llanura de San Carlos) in northern Costa Rica, 97 kilometers northwest of Ciudad Quesada, 175 kilometers from the provincial capital city of Alajuela and 198 kilometers from the capital city of San Jose. Los Chiles is a border town, only four kilometers from Nicaragua and the majority of its population was born in Nicaragua, just across the Rio Frio, a major waterway used to access small villages and farms in the surrounding area. A small town known mostly for it’s agriculture and sport fishing, you’ll find the only gas station for 20 kilometers in any direction, a bank and a few basic restaurants and cabinas for lodging. There is also a civil guard checkpoint on Highway 35 just south of town.

Caño Negro Wildlife Refuge is a watery lowland of lush sloughs and marshes, a seasonal lake, and abundant wildlife that can be access by hiring a boat from Los Chiles. These boating trips typically travel as much as 23 kilometers down the Río Frio, all the way to Lake Caño Negro inside the reserve and all around is a nature lovers and birdwatcher’s paradise. Solentiname Islands is another place of interest in the Los Chiles area. This is an archipelago in Lake Nicaragua, home to fishermen, farmers, and many painters and craftsmen. They can be reached by traveling up the Río Frio,  from Los Chiles, to the city of San Carlos, Nicaragua. From there, you can journey by boat into the lake and to the islands.
